bio: grew up with his two parents (who have divorced), and his brother Sean Bateman with whom he has a rocky relationship with.It is stated his violent tendencies emerged when he was 14. He went to Harvard, and is stated to have had a girlfriend Bethany, but they broke up. Patrick went on to get a job at Pierce and Pierce a company owned by his father, and took up the role of Vice President. Patrick currently lives at the American Gardens Building on west 87th street in New York and is 27 years old. Throughout multiple media's his death is vastly contended with him shown being killed by an icepick in American Psycho 2, though this ending is mostly disagreed with. Patrick is also shown having died by boating accent in the book "glamorama" and this is generally more accepted.
Personality: Patrick appears kind to his friends and colleaugues shown by them frequently calling him a "boy next door". Which, could link to the social satire of American Psycho with that being a referance to the stereotypical "all American boy next door". Showing how Patrick appears very typical. Also Patrick Bateman appears as a voice of reason in his friend group with Mcdermott, Van Patten and Tim Bryce in the beginning, and gives many speeches against things such as racism and antisemitism. Yet this is all a facade. Under the surface Patrick Bateman is an extremely materialistic person, and delivers speeches that describe items of clothing worn by his peers. He also hallucinates multiple times throughout the narrative the most famous one of these is the killing of Paul Allen. Patrick Bateman also does multiple things such as eating jellyfish, and sprinting down avenues with cereal singing (in the book only.). He also breakdowns wishing someone would love him. He also idolises Donald Trump. Plus, an important aspect of Patricks character is his extreme murderous tendencies, which causes him to frequently hallucinate/commit several murders.
role in story: We see Patrick at the beginning eating dinner with Evelyn, Bryce and some alternative friends of Evelyns. They eat sushi and Patrick further suspects Evelyn and Bryce are having an affair. Later. we see Bryce and Patrick at a club (trying to score cocaine). Bryce jumps off the railings of the club, and we never see him again in the film (but he is seen again at the end of the book). Later, Patrick and his peers compare business cards, and Patrick realizing Paul Allen has a better business card spirals into jealousy (this is also mixed with jealousy about Paul being able to secure reservations at Dorsia) and kills Paul Allen. Throughout the book version, we get Patrick going to many clubs and dinners, and commiting many more murders such as a delivery guy, A homeless man, Bethany (his ex girlfriend whom he tortures) and a multitude of animals. Patrick then talks to detective Kimball, about the disappearance of Paul Allen, and he seems to be mostly unsuspected. Patrick pick up two prostitues. He engages in sexual acts with them, and beats them.
Later, Patrick is invited to a dinner with Mcdermott, Van Patten and Luis. The group show off their business cards once more, and Patrick finds he is topped once again this time by Luis. Patrick attempts to kill Luis, but Luis confesses his love for Patrick. Patrick leaves and later in the book Luis attempts to confess again, but fails. Afterwards, Patrick invites Jean over for dinner, and is about to kill her by a nail gun but fails after Evelyn rings. Using Pauls apartment Paul Allen picks up Christie (the prostitute) and Sabrina (a friend of his) and has sex with them. Then he kills them, killing Christie by dropping a chainsaw on her from a stairwell. He then breaks off his engagement with Evelyn
Patrick tries to use an ATM, but it shows the message "feed me a stray cat". He is about to shoot a cat, but a woman confronts him leading to a police chase. He hides in his offuce, and leaves a message on the answering machine, confessing to all the murders.
Patrick later on, visits Paul Allens apartment, but everything is cleared away and he is told to leave ane never come back. He goes back to his friends and lawyer (Harold) who laugh off the confession. Paul Allen is allegedly alive, and still in London. This leaves Patrick to realize that what he has done was pointless, and that he has gained nothing.
